There's a new show on the Food Network, it premiered last night. The first episode had the contestants make cakes based on The Simpsons, and I love that show, at least the good episodes. But that's getting off track from what's important.
Ron Ben-Israel is one of the judges on the show. He has been reduced from being demonic overlord in complete control of the stakes, to being at the whim of two other judges. He's grown a beard now, and it's gray. He honestly looks just a little depressed, but maybe that's just because I'm used to his maniacal smile that he once had constantly.
But the thing is, he seems to actually be a mostly normal person. He didn't get to force the contestants to make cakes with cheeseburgers or anything, they just made cakes. The only catch was that they only had an hour to do it (four in the second round), but that's pretty much a trademark of Food Network reality shows.
He still gets to be insane every once in a while, when he says that one of the cakes "Does not properly express empathy for the characters in the show," but in the end, he's not in control. He doesn't get to create some demented Saw-type game where some random conditions could make pretty much anyone a sweet genius. Now there aren't sweet geniuses. Just guys who make cakes. I can see why he would be a little depressed. He's lost so much.
