Hey all.
I'm pretty new to Steam. I've known what it is for quite some time, but didn't give it a try until recently. Having fun so far, which is kind of the point really.
My current computer is on the way out. I am working on building a new one. I've got the case, board, basic PSU picked out, I know what hard drive I want to grab etc.
The board has onboard video, the Intel H81 chipset, up to 1Gb (shared with system memory). It's been a long time since I built a machine. Last time a 512Mb card was a big deal, if that gives a time frame.
Does anyone have any experience with the newer onboard video? Should I be eschewing that in favor of a dedicated video card? I'm not doing any heavy gaming on Steam yet, most of the titles that I am after are older/older styled, or specify a 512Mb card if memory serves. Does integrated play well with Steam, or is it still a dog?
I am mostly a Linux user, so I am fairly excited about the fact that there are some good games available for the platform (never been much of a PC gamer...though that is changing). I have a copy of Win7 that I am thinking about using to dual boot with the new machine once I get it built up. I'm excited for where SteamOS could go. I like the game support on Windows, but like the general security and level of custom tailoring that can be done with Linux.
Should I be focusing on SteamOS,one of the other distros, Win7 (or newer), or dual boot it? I still have a copy of WinXP x64 hanging around as well (I know, even more outdated). Just looking for opinions and suggestions.
