external hard drive, what do I get?

I'd like to reinstall windows and keep some goodies in the process. I don't think I need anything fancy.



Should I just get one that plugs into a usb port? Do brand names matter? Size shouldn't be an issue, I just want to save my songs + files.



Any tips?
