It's an archway with an energy field in the middle of it. Anyone who walks through the arch gets shrunken down for a period of time, their hitboxes changing to match the model.
Upgrading it makes players players ever smaller, or makes the effect last longer, or if there is a recharge between shrinkings, makes the recharge faster.
EDIT: I'm not thinking like ant-size small. More like a 25-50% reduction in size.
